MOE Short-Term Native Language Study Scholarship for International Students (Academic Year 2025-2026)
I. Program Overview
To promote international students' understanding of Taiwan's diverse culture and languages, the Ministry of Education is implementing the ' Short-Term Native Language Study Scholarship for International Students ' program to encourage international students enrolled in domestic universities and colleges to take Taiwan's native language courses. Through systematic learning, students will enhance their language abilities and cultural literacy, deepening Taiwan's local connections and international exchanges.
II. Eligibility Requirements
International students studying native languages in domestic universities and colleges in Academic Year 114 (referring to students as defined in Article 2 of the Regulations for International Students Coming to Taiwan for Studies) and meeting the following conditions:
1. At least 18 years old, enrolled as a student in a domestic or international university or college; with good conduct and excellent academic performance.
2. Applicants for "Scholarship for International Students Coming to Taiwan to Study Native Languages": Must not be those who have already resided, stayed, engaged in academic activities (including internships), taught, or participated in study programs in Taiwan; and the visa purpose for coming to Taiwan must be limited to studying Taiwan's native languages (visa code FS).
3. Applicants for "Stipend for International Students Studying Native Languages": Must be international students, including degree students, exchange students, or non-degree international student. already enrolled in domestic universities and colleges, and have obtained two credits in the same native language course.
4. Applicants must not have previously received a Taiwan Scholarship, nor may they simultaneously receive any subsidies or scholarships from the Taiwan government agencies, institutions, or schools during the application period.
III. Scholarship/Stipend Amount and Duration
(A) Scholarship for International Students Coming to Taiwan to Study Native Languages:
1. Amount: Monthly scholarship of NT$28,000.
2. Award period and actual disbursement duration:
- Study period is three months per term, with a maximum award period of six months.
- Those unable to come to Taiwan during the award period of that year shall be deemed to have forfeited their qualification and may not retain it for the following year.
- The actual disbursement period of the scholarship shall be from the month when the recipient begins studies until the end of the award period or until the scholarship is revoked.
(B) Stipend for International Students Studying Native Languages:
1. Amount: NT$10,000 per semester.
2. Award period and actual disbursement duration:
- Maximum award period of two semesters.
- Limited to elective study of Taiwan's native languages (excluding cultural courses).
IV. Application Methods and Timeline
(A) Scholarship for International Students Coming to Taiwan to Study Native Languages: This applies to individuals who are in Taiwan for short-term native language study. This program must be managed in cooperation with the relevant department, and further announcements will be made separately.
(B) Stipend for International Students Studying Native Languages:
Students must select "Native Language Courses" offered by a department approved by the Ministry of Education before the start of the semester. The course types include: Taiwanese, Hakka, Indigenous languages, and Sign Language. Cultural courses are not included. Any native language course not listed above but that meets the requirements must be submitted for separate review.
1. Please select at least one 2-credit native language-related course, confirm that the course meets the stipend program requirements, and submit proof of completion of native language credits for that semester at the end of each semester. Application deadline: January 5 for Fall semester, July 5 for Spring semester.
2. Required documents:
- Application form
- Certificate of enrollment for the current semester
- Transcript for the current semester (must have completed and passed the native language course)
- Course syllabus (must be identifiable as an native language course)
- Alien Resident Certificate (ARC)
- Copy of bank passbook cover valid for more than three months from the deadline (for scholarship/stipend disbursement)
Those notified to supplement documents must complete them within the specified deadline. Those who fail to supplement or provide incomplete supplementation by the deadline will not be accepted.
V. Important Notes
1. If scholarship/stipend recipients' academic performance, conduct, or attendance records do not meet the relevant academic regulations of their school, the school shall suspend and revoke this scholarship/stipend.
2. Those providing false or fraudulent information will have their scholarship/stipend qualification revoked and must fully refund any scholarship/stipend amounts already received.
3. Those who apply for the Scholarship for International Students Coming to Taiwan to Study Native Languages:
(a) During the study period, students may not leave the country without permission from their school; in special circumstances, temporary departure may be permitted with school approval. For departures exceeding ten days, the scholarship for that month will be suspended and cannot be applied for retention.
(b) During study in Taiwan, students may not engage in paid work, nor may they simultaneously receive other subsidies or scholarships from the Taiwan government agencies or schools.
(c) Students must obtain accident and medical insurance at their own expense. The insurance coverage and validity period must include the duration of study in Taiwan. Those without insurance may not receive the scholarship after arriving in Taiwan.
(d) After obtaining a residence permit, those eligible to join the National Health Insurance must join according to regulations and pay monthly premiums.
VI. This announcement is formulated based on the Ministry of Education Short-Term Native Language Study Scholarship for International Students. For matters not covered herein, relevant Ministry of Education regulations shall apply.
