A Century of Flavor-Taiwanese Coffee

Hello Everyone!

This year, the Office of International Affairs is organizing a cultural exchange program with topics such as coffee, fabric-dyeing, attire and makeup, and blue-and-white porcelain. Through these topics, students will interact together as they learn more about Taiwanese cultures.

Our current course, Taiwanese Coffee – A Century of Flavors, showcases the history of coffee in Taiwan. Coffee drinking dates all the way back to 575 AD when people in southwestern Arabia began consuming it and it started gaining popularity in Western Europe around 1615. In Taiwan, coffee trees were initially introduced in 1884 by the British company Dodd's Firm, which imported 100 Arabica coffee plants from Manila to be planted in the southwestern region of present-day New Taipei. The peak period of coffee cultivation in Taiwan was around 1942, mainly in places such as Holland Lake in Chiayi; Mt Hebao in Gukeng Township, Yunlin; Ruisui Township in Hualien; and Senyong Village in Taitung as well as a few other locations such as Puli, Liouguei, Chulu in Taitung, and Guanshan. In recent years, Taiwanese coffee has received much acclaim for its excellent aroma, uniquely mild acidity, and smooth taste after proper roasting, as befits the general public’s taste preference.

The act of drinking coffee is representative of a global cultural exchange, and we welcome everyone to sign up for this event to understand the cultural context of coffee in Taiwan!
